Manzoni's House
Via Morone 1, Milan
A small jewel of history and culture nestled in the heart of Milan, an opportunity to rediscover the roots of our culture.
At Via Morone 1, between the Duomo and the Brera district, is the house of Alessandro Manzoni, where the famous Italian writer, poet and playwright lived from 1813 until his death in 1873. Some indelible pages of Italian literature were born and shaped here, including the masterpiece “I Promessi Sposi“.
The splendid Neo-Renaissance palace, embellished with elaborate terracotta decorations, welcomes visitors into a charming, quiet and private courtyard. From here, visitors can explore the ground-floor rooms, which overlook a lush garden, once owned by the house. Among these, Manzoni’s study has remained virtually intact, with a rich library of period volumes, the original desk and everyday objects that belonged to the writer.
Upstairs, through a ten-section itinerary featuring original furnishings, artwork, portraits and manuscripts, visitors can retrace Alessandro Manzoni’s literary successes, beginning with the first printings of his novel, I Promessi Sposi. At the same time, they can immerse themselves in the joys, sorrows and friendships that marked his long life. Visitors can explore the master bedroom shared by the writer with his first wife, Enrichetta Blondel, with whom he had ten children, and with his second wife, Teresa Borri, as well as the room where Manzoni stayed during the last years of his life.
A unique experience to soak up the atmosphere of the 19th century and the protagonists who brought this historic residence to life.
But Manzoni’s Milan doesn’t stop at his home: the city is dotted with places that evoke his world and his characters. From the Church of San Fedele, where Manzoni used to pray and where he fell ill in 1873, to the Church of San Marco, which then overlooked the canal, to the Corso Buenos Aires area, just steps from our hotel, home to the old Lazzaretto and the elegant Palazzo Luraschi, whose courtyard houses twelve busts of characters from “I Promessi Sposi”.
If you’re a literature enthusiast and want to discover a corner of Milan rich in history and charm, a visit to Casa Manzoni is an unmissable experience.
