Milano a Teatro

In 1778, after a fire destroyed the Teatro Ducale, the Milanese rebuilt, at their own expense, with the support of Maria Theresa of Austria, a new and even more beautiful and majestic theatre, designed by the architect Giuseppe Piermarini.

The Teatro alla Scala was born, and during that laborious reconstruction, a profound bond was born between Milan and the theater, an art, a pastime, a source of inspiration that the Milanese had intertwined with the cultural and social life of the city and that they would never, ever, ever give up…!

After La Scala, the 20th century saw the birth of equally important and innovative theatrical institutions. In 1947, with the founding of the Piccolo Teatro by Giorgio Strehler and Paolo Grassi, Milan established itself as a center of auteur prose and socially engaged theater. The Piccolo became Italy’s first permanent theater, marking a turning point in the history of national theater. Its productions, often politically and socially engaged, laid the foundation for a new approach to theater, combining social reflection with artistic quality.

Today, Milan continues to be a crossroads of theatrical trends, with a program that ranges from classics to more experimental productions. The Teatro Elfo Puccini, located directly across the street from our hotel, with its history of innovation, is a favorite among those seeking fresh, contemporary and provocative theater. It offers a rich program of contemporary and avant-garde performances that attract an audience curious and open to new forms of artistic expression. The Teatro Franco Parenti and the Teatro Carcano also offer a wide range of performances, from drama to dance, to avant-garde performances.

A small historical gem is Milan’s Teatro Gerolamo, nicknamed “the little Scala” for its elegance and horseshoe-shaped structure. Originally a puppet theater, after extensive restoration, it reopened in 2017 and today offers a diverse program ranging from drama to music in a charming and intimate setting.

For Milanese, theater is not just an art to be enjoyed, but a true social and cultural ritual. Going to the theater means taking a break from the daily grind, reflecting, experiencing emotion and sharing these sensations with the audience. Theater seasons are filled with enthusiasts who renew their season tickets year after year, as well as with the many tourists who want to immerse themselves in the city’s culture. Whether it’s opera at La Scala, a classical production at the Piccolo, or an innovative show at the Elfo Puccini, theater in Milan is an experience worth experiencing again and again.
